The story behind this video

A two week holiday with family, spent exploring the beautiful scenery around the northern Ireland coast, with excursions south of the border into the Republic of Ireland, was a real eye opener for my wife Liz and myself.

We've spent may very happy times in Ireland, but mostly along the west Atlantic coast, so this trip to the eastern side of Ireland, bounded by the Irish Sea, was a fresh experience for us both.

As usual when we're out exploring, we had our trusty, old fashioned maps with us, and used them to navigate along the coastline, stopping at interesting looking places.

One such interesting looking place was Balbriggan, just a short way south of the border in the Republic.

Balbriggan has a nice beach, which many of the locals were enjoying on this day of mixed weather, but I was more interested in exploring the harbour, with its picturesque lighthouse perched on the end on the harbour wall.

When we made our way round to the harbour I was delighted to find this enchanting scene laid out before me, with the lighthouse, harbour walls, and suitably weathered boats tied up alongside in a great looking composition.

Add to that some dramatically threatening rain storms out to sea, contrasting with the sunlit harbour, and I was soon hunched over my camera, capturing the hundreds of still images meeded to create just a few seconds of time lapse video.

All the while I was shooting frames, that rain storm was moving closer to land, and after twenty minutes discretion got the better part of valour and we packed up and started marching back to our car on the far side of the bay.

Well we didn't quite make it, and got nicely soaked in the ensueing downpour.

But this is Ireland after all!
