The secret lives of the rich and famous were on display from the balcony of our cabin of our cruise liner, thirteen decks above the Mediterranean sea, as we sailed into the seaside town of Cannes on the French Riviera.
Megayachts and helicopters were the order of the day in this bastion of indulgence and wealth, and my wife Liz and I were looking forward to getting off the ship and having an explore around this hitherto un-visited part of France.
With only a limited time ashore we decided to take the 'Petit Train' tour along the promenade and up into the town, which was quite nice, but we soon came to realise that Cannes was just one huge bulding site, with roadworks and barricades marring the views of the rather lovely old art deco buildings.
On the whole, we much prefer the less glitzy and more natural parts of France that we've visited over the years.
Worthwhile having a look though, before sailing on to our next port of call.
