A clear horizon at sunset is a rare occurence on the North Wales coast, as normally there's a band of cloud sitting out over the Irish Sea which prevents the sun being visible all the way down to the earth's rim.
So when the horizon is clear I take full advantage to shoot time lapse videos of the sun disappearing into the sea, hoping to catch a glimpse of that mystical and elusive 'green flash' that apparently can occur at the moment the last of the suns orb vanishes.
Well I've never seen or photographed it, but that doesn't mean I won't stop trying, which explains in part whay there are so many time lapse videos of the sunset in my collection!
On this occasion my wife Liz and I were at one of our favourite summertime sunset viewing locations, the promenade at Deganwy, which not only gives a good view of the sunset at this time of year but also has some lovely foreground interest in the form of the tidal waters and sandbanks of the river Conwy estuary as it empties into the sea.
The weather was perfect for viewing a sunset, as North Wales was under an area of high pressure at the time, so the atmosphere was loaded with particles that caused the sky around the setting sun to glow orange and gold as the sunlight had to cut through a thicker and thicker layer of dust laden air as the sun approached the horizon.
Another effect of the warm air was a heat haze which gave me that lovely effect of the sun sort of breaking up into layers the lower it sat in the sky.
So, no green flash this time, but still a lovely sunset to enjoy at the seaside with the good company of my wife Liz.
