Time lapse of a dramatic sunset over the North Wales coast #31

The story behind this video

Another summer's evening and another delightful trip to the North Wales coast for my wife Liz and I.

One of the great attractions of the North Wales coast for me as an outdoor photographer is that I never know what the weather is going to do one minute from the next.

Forget boring, featureless blue skies, they're a rare event in this part of the world, as moist air blowing in from the Altantic ocean and the Irish Sea starts to rise over the hills and mountains just inland from the coast, forming dramatic cloudscapes to enjoy.

One of our favourite locations to watch and film the action around sunset during summer is the promenade at Deganwy, with a good view to the northwest and some interesting foreground features to set against the roiling clouds.

For this shoot I decided on a view along the sweeping, stony beach to the magnificent limestone headland of the Great Orme at Llandudno, as I'd not filmed this particular view before, despite the multiple times I'd shot time lapse videos from that spot.

So with takeaway coffees to hand and the camera set up out of the breeze in the restored victorian seaside shelter, we settled back to enjoy the show as my camera clicked away, recording the hundreds of still images needed to create just a few seconds of time lapse video.

I wasn't expecting to see the sun, what with all that cloud about, but to my delight, right at the point of sunset a break in the clouds along the horizon allowed just a brief glimmer of the sun as it sank below the horizon, underlighting the adjacent clouds with a warm orange glow before finally slipping away at the end of another day.

Not a bad way to end a few hours at the seaside!
