During the week long break my wife Liz and I enjoyed in April 2023, staying at Pine Lake resort at Carnforth just to the south of England's Lake District, we looked out for a place to watch and film sunsets from.
A study of the relevant Ordinance Survey map showed us that the view to the northwest, out over Morecambe Bay to the mountains of the southern Lake District, was worth considering.
So late in the afternoon on the first evening of our stay we took the short drive to Morecambe and explored the entire length on the extensive promenade, looking for a spot with a clear view over Morecambe Bay, but also with some interesting foreground for me to include in my time lapse and photographic compositions.
In the end we chose this view, overlooking a breakwater, which split the composition up into horizontal bands of light and dark as the wet sand, exposed at low tide, reflected the light from the colourful skies above.
On subsequent evenings we looked for alternative viewpoints alog the Morecambe promenade, but we kept coming back to this spot as the composition including the breakwater was hard to better.
All in all I shot three time lapse videos from this viewpoint on different evenings throughout the week, catching different cloud and light patterns each time.
This is the first of those time lapse videos, featuring a rather cloudy sunset in which the setting sun finds just a tiny gap in the clouds along the horizon, ending the day with a final burst of warm light.
