Being on an enormous cruise liner while docked in port gives one a rather unique viewing platform over the landscape and town.
And I took full advantage of this fact during the cruise that my wife Liz and I enjoyed in the western Mediterranean during October 2023.
This particular time lapse video shows the seafront and town of Naples at sunset, and on into deepening twilight as the lights of the town take over from the natural light of day.
To film this particular view, I climbed up to the highest available point on the ship, eighteen decks above the sea.
And to create a stable platform from my time lapse shoot (very important that!) I wrapped the legs of my Gorillapod around the ship's railing before mounting my Canon 6DMK2, complete with heavy lens, to the quick release coupling.
I can't speak highly enough of the Gorillapod, as it held my camera firmly in place with a very long drop to the waters below.
I didn't know what to expect from this day to night shoot, but was hoping for some lovely twilight lighting.
And I wasn't disappointed, as the clouds above picked up glorious pink and orange hues as the sun sank behind the town, before the sky darkened and the lights of the town became more prominent.
Not a bad way to end the day!
