Prestatyn on the North Wales coast has long been associated with summer beach holidays, but with the advent of the cheap package holiday abroad, with guaranteed warmth and sunshine, Prestatyn's appeal as a holiday destination has somewhat waned over the past few decades.
Which is a shame, because if you don't mind getting chilly, blown off your feet and rained on every now and then, the coast and beaches here are absolutely fantastic.
My wife Liz and I often make the half hour drive here from our home in northeast Wales to enjoying a long walk along the golden sands, stopping off for either an ice cream or a hot coffee as the weather dictates.
But another, more pressing, reason that we come here it to watch and photograph the summer sunsets to the northwest out over the Irish Sea.
This is big skies with active weather country, and unless cloud cover is 100% there is usually something impressive to see as the sun sinks towards the horizon.
But on this particular evening the skies were clear and we able to enjoy a sunset all the way down to sea level, and of course, I had my camera set up to record the hundreds of still images needed to create this time lapse video of the event, using the silhouette of a conveniently placed outflow marker post as a fixed point of interest.
What a lovely way to spend an hour or so in this somewhat neglected gem on the North Wales coast.
