One thing that the volcanic island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands has in abundance is dramatic scenery.
A relic of its violent creation, Gran Canaria boasts some impressive rock formations, with probably the most famous being Roque Bentayga, featured in this time lapse video.
My wife Liz and I spent most of our two week winter break on Gran Canaria driving round in our little hire car over twisty mountain roads, revisiting favourite places and finding new wonders to enjoy as well.
And one of the places on our list to re-visit was the very quaint village of Tejeda, almost in the dead centre of Gran Canaria.
Arriving there in the late afternoon, I was soon aware that we were ideally placed to catch a spectacular sunset over Roque Bentayga as it towered over Tejeda and the surrounding countryside.
So Liz and I enjoyed a very lovely hour or so, sitting in Tejeda's botanical park sipping a take-away coffee in the warm, fragrant air while watching the light show over Roque Bentayga as the sun set and dusk turned to night.
The only downside was that it was an hour and a half's drive back down the twisty mountain roads to our resort on the south coast.
It's a good job I like driving along challenging routes!
