I was really looking forward to the two week winter break my wife Liz and I had planned for February 2022 on Tenerife in the Canary Islands.
Not least because our resort, with its south facing aspect right on the sea front, meant that I could climb out of bed with the first light of dawn and walk down to the beach to film the gorgeous sunrises out over the Atlantic ocean that this part of the world is famous for.
But I hadn't reckoned on an unseasonable 'Calima' wind, blowing a dense cloud of dust over the island from the Sahara desert, effectively blanketing the lower part of the sky and delaying the visible arrival of the sun until it had risen quite a few degrees above the horizon.
But, determined to make the best of it, I spent several early mornings overlooking the coast with my camera clicking away recording the changes of light and eventual appearance of the sun through the cloud of dust.
And in the end I was able to capture this sunrise, featuring the volcanic shoreline just outside our resort.
Quite an unusual sunrise, and still worth getting out of bed early for!
