One of the iconic North Wales viewpoints and hikes, that people come from miles around to enjoy, this is the view out over the Vale of Clywd as seen from the slopes of Moel Famau, the highest peak in the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Fortunately for me, a fifteen minute drive gets me to this spot, so whenever the weather looks interesting around sunset my wife Liz and I can jump in the car and set off to enjoy the spectacle.
Which is just what we did on this particular late afternoon at the beginning of February 2023.
In the winter the sun sets to the southwest, and is ideally placed for watching from the Pen Barras car park, situated in the saddle between the twin peaks of Moel Famau and Feol Fenlli.
So I didn't even need to carry my camera equipment up the mountain to ge the view I wanted to record for this time lapse video of the sunset over the western horizon.
The sunset itself wasn't outstanding, but there was a smell gap in the clouds along the horizon through which the sun put in a brief appearance before dipping below the mountains of Snowdonia, far to the west.
And then the light show really kicked off, with the textured clouds over the Vale of Clwyd catching some vivid red underlighting from the sun, now just below the horizon.
Well worth a short drive to witness such magnificent light at the end of the day!
