Arch #1

Arched gateway in town wall, Caernarfon, North Wales

The story behind this image

The old town of Caernarfon, on the North Wales coast has got some fantastic historical architecture including a castle and a walled old town.

This photo shows one of the gates through the wall, leading from the sea into the town itself.

What influenced me to take this picture was the wonderful interplay of light and shadow on the inside of the gate opening, with the streetlights highlighting a really well defined shape within the geometry of the gate, with the surrounding shadow area providing the constrasting negative space.

Arrangements of light and dark areas within an image have always been an important part of my photographic 'vision', and I was delighted to find such a scene on what was just a casual stroll.

I'm not so sure about the car though!
