An unusally calm summer's evening on the north Wales coast saw the giant turbines of the Gwynt-y-Môr offshore windfarm standing idle in their serried ranks along the horizon of the Irish Sea.

It was the end of a stormy day in November over the rolling landscape of the Vale of Clwyd in northeast Wales, and as the cloud was breaking up I left home in the hope of catching a dramatic sunset from one of my favourite viewpoints on the slopes of Moel Famau, the highest peak in the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a quarter hour drive from my home.

Driving down into the Vale, from above the market town of Ruthin, there's a layby on the side of the road that gives a lovely view towards the west, which is a great spot just to stop and watch the sun setting.
