It's 23.00 zulu time and I'm in the North Atlantic at midsummer, somewhere near the Faroe Islands, steaming south from Iceland on board the P&O liner Azura.
Behind us to the north west the sun is attempting to set for a couple of hours before rising again very early in the morning.
I love the astronomical extremes you get at these high latitudes, but I'm also glad I'm not here in winter, as I imagine it would be somewhat gloomy!
Anyhow, back to the sunset, which is developing nicely, with colourful clouds and a band of orange light reflecting in the relatively calm sea below my position on the open promenade deck, at the stern of the ship.
Time for a photo.
But instead of leaning out of the back of the ship and just photographing the sky and sea I decided to step back and include a portion of the ship's structure in the composition, acting as a frame for the sunset, sky and sea.
The high dynamic range of my Canon 6D, with careful exposure control, allowed me to capture detail in the lightest and darkest parts of the frame, to be brought out later in Adobe Lightroom and PhotoShop.
