Photographing into the light on a bright sunny day usually isn't recommended, but on this occasion the striking visual effects produced made it well worth stepping outside of the normal conventions.
This is the beach at Conwy Morfa, at the mouth of the river Conwy as it empties into the Irish Sea on the North Wales coast.
It's a fascinating stretch of coast and well worth exploring, camera in hand, as there are so many varied views to enjoy within a half mile walk along the shore.
This view looks west into the setting towards the headland at Penmaenmawr which drops dramatically into the sea at the end of the beach.
What attracted me to this scene were the high contrast alternating bands of light and dark, rendering the view almost monochromatic and giving a very dramatic perspective that just wouldn't be seen under more 'normal' lighting.
Well worth ignoring a few conventions for.
