The story behind this image

Normally when you think of photographing at the coast you picture sweeping vistas, taking in large expanses of sand, sea and sky, beautifully lit by a late afternoon sun.

But what do you do when you get there and it's flat grey cloud with a stiff breeze to boot?

Think small is my answer.

That blowing sand can make some lovely abstract mini landscapes, such as these ripples formed around a solitary rock, and the flat grey light is ideal for capturing details without too much contrast that would overcome the patterns and textures on display.

So as it was, I spent a happy half hour in the company of my wife Liz on the windswept beach at Conwy Morfa on the North Wales coast, wandering around the margins where sand meets rock, discovering the beauty that lay at our feet.
