When my wife Liz and I visit a new town we very quickly abandon the usual tourist hotspots and instead we mooch around the backstreets, checking out how ordinary life is lived.
Such was the case during our two week stay on the Mediterranean island of Crete, where we stopped for a looksee at the small town of Mythos on the eastern side of the island.
One thing that struck us during our stay on Crete was the overwhelming use of blue and white paint, the colours of Greece's national flag.
Everywhere we looked there were blue doors and windows, set in whitewashed walls, with the age and condition of the paint getting more rustic the further away from the centre of town we wandered.
This particular blue door caught my photographic eye, not because it was old or the paint was peeling as I usually like to photograph, but for the wonderful play of light and shadow across its face, with the single knocker picked out in a shaft of sunlight.
After all, light is what photography is all about isn't it?
