During our two week stay on the Mediterranean island of Crete my wife Liz and I spent most of our time driving around the more rugged areas, avoiding the developed, touristic bits as much as possible.
The interior of Crete was absolutely stunning, if rather hot for the time of year, and we were surprised at just how verdant the landscape was despite the lack of rain.
Most of the verdure proved to be the hardy olive tree, with thousands, if not millions dotted around the landscape.
A good number of the olive trees were in managed and irrigated groves, but a significant number were wild, and growing in the most inhospitable places, such as this pile of large boulders on the side of a dry hill on the Lasithi Plateau in central Crete.
The green of the trees, the red of the rocks and the blue of the sky were a lovely colour combination and so I stopped the car by the side of the road to quickly take this photo.
