During our two week stay on the Mediterranean island of Crete in September 2017 my wife Liz and I spent most of our time driving around in our hire car, staying away as much as possible from the heavily developed tourist traps of the north coast.
Instead we sought out the beautiful and rugged scenery of undeveloped stretches of coastline and the mountainous interior of the island.
One of the nicest places we found was the small seaside village of Mochlos on the northeastern coast of Crete.
Not only was Mochlos lovely in itself, but the drive along the coast road to get to it was spectacular.
One of the most eye-popping sights on the way to Mochlos was the very large white sandstone quarry, set right on the coast and shining brightly in the noon sun.
This photo was taken late in the day as we drove back from Mochlos to our resort near Hersonissos, with the light on the sandstone a bit less fierce and a bit warmer than at midday when we passed by going in the opposite direction.
Good job we had our sunglasses handy!
