Neither my wife Liz nor myself are that keen on lying on sun drenched beaches when we go on holiday, we'd much rather be out and about exploring the more out of the way spots.
Which is why during our two week stay on the lovely Mediterranean island of Crete we racked up some serious mileage in our battered old Hyundai hire car, driving the mountainous interior roads and single track dirt roads that skirted sparsely inhabitied coastlines.
One of the great drives we enjoyed took us eastwards along the north coast of Crete, with the road running right alongside the sea for a few kilometers.
We stopped for a leg stretch right by this rock strewn beach near the tiny village of Vlichadia.
It was just lovely, with a fresh breeze coming in off the sea kicking up some smallish waves which would break with a swoosh over the pebbles and rocks as the sun warmed the scene before us.
I took my camera down to near the water's edge and sat on a rock to get a low persrpective for this composition, emphasising the foreground stones and the gorgeous sweep of the surfline leading off into the distance.
I could have sat there all day, but with much more to see and explore it was soon up and off again to the next hidden beauty spot.
Nice way to spend a day!
