The island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea is well know for many things, mostly tourism, but back in time one of the features Crete was well know for was its windmills.
Numbering in the thousands, these windmills were once used to pump water from underground aquifers for irrigation, but have now almost all fallen into disuse and been allowed to crumble.
This is one such example of a derelict and decaying stump of a windmill tower on the Lasithi Plateau in central Crete.
Looking like the stump of a broken tooth, this collapsing tower is strangely poignant, set as it is on a pile of its own rubble.
I wonder how much longer it can stay standing?
