The island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea is well know for many things, mostly tourism, but back in time one of the features Crete was well know for was its windmills.
Numbering in the thousands, these windmills were once used to pump water from underground aquifers for irrigation, but have now almost all fallen into disuse and been allowed to crumble.
However, I doubt if this windmill, situated by the beach at the seaside resort of Elounda, was ever used for any practical purpose.
Obviously built as a tourist attraction, it was the combination of stark colours in this view that caused me to pause as my wife Liz and I strolled by on a walk along the promenade.
As the windmill didn't look authentic, I decided to deliberately exaggerate the colour contrast as well, using my polarising filter to maximum effect on the sky.
I felt that an unauthentic windmill deserved an unauthentic sky to go with it!
