As a rule, my wife Liz and I usually avoid tourist zones while away on holiday, preferring instead to explore off the beaten track.
But every now and then we'll venture into town, usually to get some shopping, which is why we were found on the streets of Old Hersonissos on the Mediterranean island of Crete for a short while during our two week stay.
Having found a parking space, we decided on a bit of a walkabout after shopping, but instead of sticking to the 'pretty' part of town we set off into the backstreets to see how things looked for the folk who actually live here.
What we found was the usual mix of nice houses, interspersed with crumbling ruins, uncared for and abandoned.
It's the crumbling ruins that I like to photograph, with much more character and story on offer than the newer buildings.
Such as this broken and barred window, set in a stone wall that had definitely seen better days.
I wonder what story this house has to tell?
