During our two week holiday spent exploring the beautiful, dramatic landscapes and coastlines of Devon and Cornwall my wife Liz and I set aside a day to drive and hike in the Dartmoor National Park.
The day we chose for our adventure was one of mixed weather to put it mildly, with sharp showers tracking across the landscape, interspersed with bright sunlight in an ever changing atmospheric dance that was very exciting to watch and be out in!
The longest hike we managed in-between showers was on one of the high points of the moor at Hemsworthy Gate, a bleak area of gorse, heather and granite tors.
But to me, bleak is beautiful, especially when lit so dramatically.
Such as shown in this photo, with a patch of sunlight lighting up the lovely colours of the gorse and heather flowers at my feet, while the granite tor in the background remains wreathed in ominous shadow.
