Door and window #1

Door and window set into a red wall, Hallstatt, Austria

The story behind this image

So, having got the standard tourist photos out of the way it's time to explore and seek out interesting local history and detail.

My wife Liz and I are in Hallstatt, Austria. A delightful lakeside town with a dubious climate. Liz is doing her thing bobbing in and out of shops looking for interesting local artifacts, and I'm gazing around at the quaint architecture, actively looking for an opportunity to take a photo that's a little different.

I'm always attracted to characterful doors and windows, they act like the facial features in a portrait, revealing something of the nature and character of a place and its inhabitants.

As far as Hallstadt goes I would say 'old and quirky' would describe the impression I came away with, and this photo of a colourful but slightly careworn house front encapsulate that feeling for me.

I'm glad to say that Liz also had a sucessful shop, so we were both happy.
