The story behind this image

Dubrovnik, and indeed most of the coastal territory to the north, once formed part of the Venetian 'empire'.

As such, there are a lot of Venetain touches in the architecture, for example this lion head, carved into the walls of the old town.

I love wandering round a historical site like Dubrovnik, spotting and photographing these smaller details that bring out so much of the story of the area.

Photographing details in strong sunlight is not usually recommended due to excessive contrast, but I decided to make the shadows and highlights in the carving a feature of the image, with the shadow cast by the carving onto the flat wall being as important a part of the composition as the lion's head itself.
