On the top of Mount Srd, high above the town of Dubrovnik on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, sits this very large stone cross.
Visible for miles around, the cross was damaged in the last Balkan war in 1991 and was restored, along with the cable car to the summit, in 2011. Just in time for Liz and I to visit during our summer holiday in 2012.
Photographing the cross in the midday sun proved to be a high contrast affair, and in the end I decided to render the scene in a slightly abstract manner, including the sun itself in the frame.
Taking a photo including a bright sun is always a challenge, and I helped myself by taking off all filters from the camera's lens and giving the front lens element a good clean before making the exposure.
The end result was what I planned it should be, quite stark but with some detail retained both in the cross and the sky.
I hope and pray that the recent conflicts in this area are never repeated, and that the friendly, open and resilient people of this beautiful region enjoy lasting peace.
