Dubrovnik street #2

Main street, Old Dubrovnik, Croatia

The story behind this image

Dubrovnik, and indeed all of this coastal region, has a fascinating and often tragic history based on conflict and conquest.

As everyone knows, the latest conflicts in this area were in the 1990s involving Serbs and Croats, in which Dubrovnik came under sustained attack from Serbian artillery which caused a fair amount of damage to the old town.

It's hard to believe that such a beautiful region should suffer such an ugly episode, and it's a tribute to the people of Dubrovnik that so soon after the conflict ended the town was repaired and tourism started up again.

This photo shows the main street through old Dubrovnik, and strolling along past the vendors and shopkeepers you'd be hard pressed to find any evidence of the recent history.

But look more closely and the scars from bullets and shrapnel are there to see in the building facades.

It was really quite a moving experience to be there and see the resilience and fortitiude of the local people, and I'm glad we made the effort to explore.
