Walking round the town of old Dubrovnik on the Adriatic coast one can't help but be impressed by the sheer massiveness of the city walls, some 45ft thick in places and faced with closely fitted stone blocks.
The portion of the walls shown here lead down to a small harbour and are so wide that there's a restaurant on top.
You can actually pay to go up and walk all around the circuit of the walls. I was tempted, but in the 40ÂșC heat and blazing sun both Liz and I thought better of it and retreated to the shade with an ice cream instead.
