Estes Park, Stanley Hotel #1

The historic Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado, with the Lumpy Ridge range of hills in the background

The story behind this image

I was faintly amused while walking around Estes Park during Liz's and my holiday in Colorado, at how many specially preserved historic buildings there were.

What I found amusing was that these buildings were all only around a hundred years old, whereas from where we live in North Wales, anything younger than five hundred years old is considered relatively modern and not worth making a fuss about.

That being said, Estes Park has done a grand job of promoting their historical legacy, with the iconic Stanley Hotel being the jewel in the crown.

Stanley Hotel's main claim to fame is as the location for the setting of Stephen King's novel 'The Shining', and they run regular special events based around that.

However, my main interest in the hotel was as a photographic subject, but close up it was very difficult to find a suitable angle that didn't included masses of parked cars and building works.

But from a distance, in this case the far side of Estes Lake, and with the peaks of Lumpy Ridge behind, the view of the hotel looked much more appealing.
