The morning of 11th December 2012 dawned ice cold with clear skies. Perfect for photographing the planets Venus, Saturn and Mercury which were all visible close to the horizon at twilight.
So an hour before sunrise I found myself on the banks of the river Dee at Queensferry, which is handily placed between home and work for me.
While I was busy photographing the heavenly bodies the factory on the far side of the river started pumping out this heavy plume of smoke into the pre-sunrise skies.
Initially somewhat distressed at this rampant pollution I then noticed that the smoke plume had bent back on itself, forming a giant question mark in the sky, set against the blue and orange twilight colours, in a rather attractive shape.
So I thought to myself, maybe I can make something of beauty out of this ugliness, so I composed a few last images of the smoke before packing up and heading to work.
on reviewing this images this one in particular captured the essence of the scene in front of me that morning.
Distressing in subject matter, but captivating as an image.
