Driving back down the Hochalpenstrasse (high alpine road) in Austria, Liz and I passed through different layers of climate and vegetation. From the frozen wasteland of the Grossglockner glacier right at the top, to the lush meadows of the valley at the bottom, we saw it all.
About halfway down we hit a zone of alpine meadow which still had wild flowers in bloom. This was great, as at the lower levels the flowering season was over, and we had been disappointed not to see any carpets of flowers near where we were staying in Schladming.
Of course, we pulled over and spent a happy half hour walking around the paths, avoiding damaging the flowers and taking numerous photos for Liz to try to reproduce as watercolours, and me to work on in PhotoShop.
The photo you see here is heavily worked on to give an impressionist feel to the meadow, which is how I like to think one of my favourite painters, Monet, would have interpreted it.
I've yet to see what Liz will make of it though.
