The story behind this image

I wasn't sure what to expect when Liz and I decided on a winter break on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands.

Images of tasteless seaside resort developments and rows of beach unbrellas were in my mind, and to be sure, there were plenty of those on the east and south coasts of the island.

But drive up to the west coast and things were vastly different, and much better from our point of view.

Most of the west coast is pretty inaccessible, with huge sea cliffs sweeping down to the sea, effectively blocking off all access.

But at a couple of places the very twisty coastal road reaches the sea.

This is the view south along that rugged coastline from one of those spots, the lovely little harbour of Puerto de la Aldea, as viewed from the end of the short breakwater that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean.

Photographing into the sun reduced the scene to a monochrome rendition, and the sea haze added some mystery to the view, allowing the distant cliffs to recede, providing a sense of depth to the final image.
