Early February on the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, and the flowers are in full bloom on the headland above the charming seaside town of Puerto de las Nieves on the north west coast.
Liz and I had Puerto de las Nieves on our 'must see' list of places to visit during our week long stay, primarily to see the famous 'Dedo de Dios' (Finger of God) rock formation at the side of the harbour.
The rock formation proved less than impressive, having snapped off at the first knuckle back in 2005, but the town and seaside promenade were delightful and Liz and I spent the afternoon strolling around, photographing, eating and drinking.
The promenade took us up the side of a headland, giving lovely views back over the town and out over the Atlantic Ocean to the next headland along the coast.
As we climbed we passed these beds of vibrant red flowers, just begging to be photographed against the deep blue of the sea and sky.
My polarising filter took the glare of the afternoon sun off the flower petals, allowing the saturated red to shine through.
