One of the most astonishing places that Liz and I visited on our cruise around Iceland was the active volcanic area of Hverarond.
With sulpherous fumeroles, boiling mud, and steam coming out of the ground we could have been on another planet.
In fact, the place is so other-worldly that astronauts get sent here for training!
The surrounding volcanic landscape was quite stark and dramatic too, with a single road winding its way through bare mounds of volcanic lava and ash.
While everyone else was busy taking selfies I took advantage of a brief shaft of sunlight to capture this image of the hills and road, glowing with a burnt ochre colour and set against the backdrop of a dark and brooding sky.
The light on the landscape only lasted a few seconds before the clouds rolled back over the sun, but the those few moments the scene was just wonderful.
