In the autumn of 2018 my wife Liz and I spent an amazing two weeks exploring the lakes and mountains of northern Italy.
Based in Varenna on the shores of Lake Como, our normal mode of transport was our little rented Fiat Panda, but for one day we abandoned the roads and took to the water instead.
There's a great ferry service on Lake Como that runs constantly between the three towns of Varenna, Menaggio and Bellagio which we took advantage of to get some views of these lovely locations from a different angle than we could see from the land.
This picture was taken just after leaving the harbour at Varenna, and shows the town backed by those magnificent mountains.
