In the autumn of 2018 my wife Liz and I spent an amazing two weeks exploring the lakes and mountains of northern Italy.
For the most part we were based in a holiday apartment overlooking the lovely town of Varenna on the shores of Lake Como, and it was a real treat to wake up in the morning, go outside onto our balcony and look at a view like this one.
Just after sunrise the light filtered through the mountains to the east and lit up the roofs and buildings of Varenna below us like jewels, while the waters of the lake took on a dark azure blue sheen which faded towards the sun kissed mountains on the far side of the lake.
Not a bad way to start the day!
