During our two week holiday exploring the lakes and mountains of northern Italy, my wife Liz and I took a day trip to the city of Milan, meeting up with Attilio Alessio, a friend and colleauge of mine who lives and works in the area.
Attilio showed us round some of the sights, including the amazing Galleria Vittorio Emanuele shopping mall, with its art deco style architecture and beautifully preserved facades.
But while it was easy to be overwhelmed by the grand scale and opulence of the arcade, and only see the big picture, I made the effort to hunt out some finer details.
Looking down, I noticed that the entire floor was inlaid with tiny ceramic pieces, making a huge mosaic covering the whole of the arcade in colourful patterns.
How long it must have taken to place each individual tile to amke the floor just beggars belief!
