Kinvarra, on Ireland's Atlantic west coast in County Galway, is a sleepy seaside town with a bit of local fishing going on, together with some tourism that supports a small artist community.
On a walk around the town with my wife Liz during one our our regular trips to this part of the world, I was very taken with the old stone harbour, which had some lovely detail to enjoy, such as this vivid red boat, the brighest and most eye catching feature in the harbour at the time.
'Always photograph red' is one of my guiding artistic principles, so the boat and its reflection, set against the dark water of the harbour under subdued, cloud diffused light, was an obvious subject for me to point my lens at from the far side of the breakwater.
After taking several differently composed exposures, I found this one to be the most visually compelling, featuring just a portion of the boat which helped maximise the impact of the colour.
