A three day weekend in late autumn found my wife Liz and I driving around the Lake District in Northern England, checking out some of the many beauty spots in this part of the world.
As usual, the Ordinance Survey was our friend and guide in this endeavour, and with Liz acting as a human satnav (left - no right - no straight on!) we found some lovely places to stop and take in the views.
Apart from the lakes there are also some stunning passes to drive up and down, taking in bleak, desolate moors and mountains.
During our three day stay we decided on driving the Honister Pass, running from the village of Seatoller in the east through to the lovely Buttermere to the west, and taking in some really rugged and wild landscape on the way.
So were weren't expecting to find a working slate mine at the top of the pass, complete with visitor centre, cafe, loos and gift shop!
The Honister Slate Mine was like an oasis in the desert, so of course we pulled in for a coffee, a trip to the toilet and for Liz, a visit to the gift shop for some advanced Christmas present buying.
While Liz was exploring the shop, I was outside in the biting wind (it gets cold up there!), camera and tripod at the ready, taking in the dramatic views.
This image was my favourite of the few I managed to take before retreating back inside, and shows the majestic beauty of this part of the Lake District, with the Honister Pass road snaking across the landscape as sunlight and shadow chased each other over the hills.

Filters - Polarising filter used to enhance colours. 2 stop neutral density graduated filter used to reduce the brightness of the sky.
