During our three day long weekend in the beautiful Lake District in late autumn 2017, my wife Liz and I spent most of our time exploring the less popular locations.
One of our favourite such spots, discovered on a previous visit, was Thirlmere.
This lake, to the north of the heavily developed Windermere, is much wilder and untamed.
It's also much easier to get access to, with a small road running along the length of the lake, dotted with convenient laybys and overlooks.
With a low angled autumal sun shining patchily through passing cloud, the trees and rocks by the lakeside glowed as they caught the intermittent rays.
A short hike from the car brought us to this lovely little promontory, giving a view up the lake to a vee shaped valley at the far end, silhouetted against the bright sky.
A lovely interplay of light and shapes, dark and light.
