The sun was rapidly approaching the western horizon as my wife Liz and I pulled into the National Trust car park on the shores of Thirlmere in England's Lake District.
We had been entranced by glimpses of light on the mountains through the trees at the side of the road as we drove southwards at the end of a glorious day spent exploring and photographing to the north of the lakes.
Just time for one more effort then, before the light finally disappeared for the day, and I was rewarded for my diligence by a stunning show of sunlight and shadow on the peak and flanks of Helvellyn on the far side of Thirlmere.
To do justice to this view I decided on a stitched panoramic composition, capturing almost the full sweep of the lake and mountains beyond.
Then it was finally time to call it a day and head back to our holiday apartment, pondering what wonders the next day had in store for us.
