The story behind this image

This photo was taken at the extreme northern end of Llyn (Lake) Padarn, in Snowdonia, North Wales.

Llyn Padarn is a fascinating place to visit and photograph, with the town of Llanberis and the ruins of Dolbarden castle nestling on its eastern shore, while on the western shore the stark and gloomy slate workings of Dinorwig overlook the placid waters.

This particular view is one of my favourites, but it's very unusal to find the lake bathed in glorious sunshine, with not even a ripple to disturb the mirror-like surface. Normally it's blowing a gale, raining or snowing!

The mountains either side of the pass of Llanberis look unusually benign in these photos, but have claimed many lives over the years, and the whole area is steeped in history that has been shaped by this huge landscape.

I count it a real priviledge and blessing to be able to visit this region almost on a whim from my home, which is about an hour's drive away.
