During our week long winter break on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands my wife Liz and I managed to explore pretty much all of this relatively small island.
One of the places we liked so much that we went back to a couple of times was the small seaside town of Arrieta, on the north coast of the island.
Relatively undeveloped, Arrieta seemed to be a place where the locals went for a day out and a spot of surfing on the large Atlantic rollers that surge onto this coastline.
The short promenade was bounded by a large wooden and concrete jetty which had been well smashed up by the action of wind and wave, as can be seen in this photo, showing a broken concrete plinth and missing pilings.
Sadly, the damage meant that the jetty itself was out of bounds, but even so, its remains made for a very eye catching feature, set against the curling Atlantic waves as they broke on the volcanic lava beach.
