The story behind this image

Early evening on the North Wales coast, and the high tide is lapping on the pebble beach at Llanfairfechan as wispy cumulus clouds float by overhead.

This is a beautiful spot, relatively unspoilt and retaining much of the olde worlde charm that this part of the world is known for.

As a photographer, I was inspired by the low angled light grazing the contours of the stones at the water's edge, and wanted to photograph the scene in as powerful and evocative manner as possible.

To the end I used a few artistic guidelines in the composition of this photograph, such as the rule of thirds, incorporating the strong diagonals of the stepped concrete ramp leading into the sea and finally using a six stop Lee 'Little Stopper' neutral density filter to give an extended shutter speed which blurred the wavelets washing over the pebble beach.

In post processing, a conversion to a warm toned monochrome removed distracting and clashing colours from the image, allowing the shapes, textures and movement within the scene to be fully appreciated.
