The story behind this image

A late spring evening found my wife Liz and myself enjoying the last of the sunshine at Llanfairfechan on the North Wales coast.

Llanfairfechan is one of those charming welsh seaside resorts that it seems that time has forgotten, and we often go there at the close of the day for a walk along the coastal path, enjoying the sights, smells and sounds of the sea.

It's rare in this part of the world to get a cloud free sunset, but on this occasion, following a clearing cold front, the air was crisp and clear right to the horizon, allowing the sun's low-angled rays to paint the town and beach with a golden glow.

Those golden rays had a particularly lovely effect on the rusty and decaying old beach groynes and breakwaters, partially immersed as a rising tide covered the beach.

So in the few minutes available to me before sunset I took as many different photos featuring the groynes as I could, using a 6 stop neutral density filter to blur the gentle waves and place as much emphasis as possible on the shapes, textures and colours of those rusting iron pillars and old wooden planks.

I love the air of genteel decay in the images I took that evening, so redolent of Llanfairfechan itself.
