One of the delights that my wife Liz and I enjoy living in North Wales is going exploring along roads and paths we've never been along before.
Who knows what you're going to find around the next bend or over the next hill?
One autumn afternoon in 2016 we decided on such an expedition, to drive to and walk around the mysterious Llyn Cowlyd in the Snowdonia National Park, the deepest lake in Wales.
Well, our expedition didn't quite go as planned, as the road to Llyn Cowlyd was blocked by a locked gate, resulting in a very long reversing manoeuver down a single track on my part.
So we never got to see the lake on this occasion, but never mind, as the road from Trefriw up to the lake was just amazing, and not for the faint hearted!
Winding through mixed woodland up some very steep and bendy bits, the views from the road back down overlooking Llyn Crafnant, nestling in its surrounding hills, was just stunning.
So on the way back down from our unsucessful foray to Llyn Cowlyn we stopped on the single track road, and while Liz kept a lookout for approaching traffic (none - thankfully) I took just a few frames of this view, with the autumnal coloured foreground glowing in a brief, watery patch of sunlight while the lake and mountains in the background were covered in shadow and a heavy overcast sky.
More than suitable recompense for missing out on a view of Llyn Colwyd I reckon, but we'll have to try again, hiking this time!
