Situated in the foothills of Carneddau mountains, just above Trefriw in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, Llyn Geirionydd is a jewel of a lake, very popular with wild swimmers and canoeists alike.
But I was staying well clear of the water on this beautiful sunny afternoon in early April, as there was still quite a chill in the air and the trees had yet to bring forth their new leaves, branches still bare from the previous winter.
Perfect weather for a bracing hike though, which is what my wife Liz and I enjoyed that day, partially circumnavigating the lakeshore before retracing our steps back to the well appointed car park at the far end of the lake.
Nearly back at our car, I came across this stand of trees, lit beautifully by the afternoon sun and casting graphic shadows on the grass below.
It was but the work of a moment to compose this image and fire off a few frames, dialling back the exposure until the white clouds in the sky stopped blinking a highlight warning on my camera's preview screen.
