I thought that my wife Liz and I had seen all there was to see around Llanberis and Llyn Padarn, having visited and walked here extensively during our many trips to the beautiful Snowdonia National Park in North Wales.
But how wrong could I be?!
A busy Saturday in mid September found us driving through Llanberis along the side of Llyn Padarn, looking in vain for a suitable parking space.
In the end we gave up on that fruitless exercise and decided to visit the abandoned Dinorwig slate quarry instead, on the other side of the lake.
Compared to the frenetic hustle and bustle of Llanberis, the slate quarry was an oasis of peace and tranquility, and with just the sound of birdsong for company we set off along the approved path.
A short way into the quarry we found a path branching off to this stunning overlook, with views right along the Pass of Llanberis from the peak of Snowdon to the east, right to the coast in the far west.
With light clouds passing overhead, painting the landscape below us in a moving patchwork of light and shadow, it was too good an opportunity to miss.
So while Liz got the picnic out I set up my camera right at the far end of the overlook to record a few hundred still images to render into a time lapse video of the scene.
This still image is one of those I took to make the time lapse, and shows a lovely and dramatic view out over the town of Llanberis and Llyn Padarn.
If you're in the area, and want an alternative hiking experience, then I couldn't recommend a trip to Dinorwig quarry highly enough - just try and avoid a rainy day!
