This composition emphasises the juxtaposition between the old and the new.
In many ways this acts as a visual metaphor for the contrast between the old France of quaint villages and vinyards, wood and stone, and the new France of bridges and roads, steel and concrete.
I would say that in any other city in the world, plonking a steel and glass pyramid inside an ancient courtyard would be a disaster, but somehow, in Paris, it seems to work!
