I love exploring new places, taking in the views and working out how best to capture the 'feel' of a place photographically, either through a still image, a video, a time lapse or, as in this case, a stitched panorama.
We're on the mid Wales coast at Fairbourne, on the mouth of the Mawddach estuary in the southern part of the stunning Snowdonia National Park, a place I've never visited before.
My wife Liz and I had wanted to visit this area for a while, but the two hour drive was a bit much for a casual trip, so we planned on spending a whole Saturday here, exploring the beauties of the local mountain Cader Idris and its surrounding lakes.
Trying to time a day trip to coincide with good weather and freedom from other commitments proved tricky, but one Saturday in spring everything came together and off we went.
We had a wonderful day up around Cregennan Lakes, and decided to head down to Fairbourne at teatime for something to eat.
Fairbourne was just lovely, and we drove out along the peninsula at the mouth of the Mawddach estuary to see what the views were like while we ate our tea.
Wow!
I wasn't expecting such a stunning view up the estuary from our spit of land, with the mountains of Snowdonia marching off into the distance and acres of golden sand laid out before us at low tide, puncuated by the remarkable Barmouth rail and foot bridge reaching right across from Barmouth to the southern side of the tidal flats.
Tea was forgotten for quite some time as I set about capturing something of the loveliness laid out before me as a meaningful image.
In the end, the long, thin layout of the view lent itself most suitably to a panoramic interpretation, so I shot twenty individual frames, covering a field of view of over 180 degrees, for later stitching into this monster panorama using Abode Lightroom.
